About the Medicine

Omarigliptin

Indications

Omarigliptin is used, together with diet and exercise, to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone or with other diabetes medicines such as Metformin.

How It Works

Omarigliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor. It blocks the DPP-4 enzyme, which normally breaks down gut hormones called incretins. Higher incretin levels help the pancreas release more insulin when blood sugar is high and reduce the sugar made by the liver. It works over a whole week, so it is taken only once a week.

Dosage and Administration

Adults: 25 mg once a week, on the same day each week, with or without food.

Severe kidney disease or dialysis: a lower dose is used, as prescribed by your doctor.

Missed dose: take it as soon as you remember, then go back to your usual weekly day. Do not take two doses on the same day.

Children: not for use.

Interactions

Taking Omarigliptin with insulin or a sulfonylurea (such as Gliclazide or Glimepiride) raises the chance of low blood sugar; your doctor may lower the dose of those medicines. Some medicines, such as steroids and certain diuretics, can raise blood sugar. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.

Contraindications

  • Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Allergy to Omarigliptin or another DPP-4 inhibitor
  • Severe infection, serious injury or around major surgery, when insulin is usually needed instead

Side Effects

Omarigliptin is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, headache, constipation and skin rash. Low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, hunger, confusion) is uncommon on its own but more likely with insulin or a sulfonylurea.

Get medical help at once for severe, lasting tummy pain that may spread to the back, with or without vomiting (possible inflammation of the pancreas), swelling of the face, lips or throat, blistering of the skin, or severe low blood sugar that does not improve after taking sugar.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough information on use in pregnancy; insulin is usually preferred, so tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. It is not known if Omarigliptin passes into breast milk; it is not recommended while breastfeeding unless your doctor advises.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Your doctor may check your kidney function before and during treatment.
  • Stop and see a doctor if you develop signs of pancreatitis.
  • Carry sugar or sweets and learn the signs of low blood sugar, especially if you also use insulin or a sulfonylurea.
  • Keep up your diet, exercise and regular blood sugar checks.

Overdose

Experience with overdose is limited. If too much is taken, contact a doctor; treatment is supportive and blood sugar may be monitored.
