About the Medicine

Aloe Vera & Vitamin E Acetate

Indications

Aloe Vera with Vitamin E Acetate is a skin care preparation (usually a cream, lotion or gel) used to moisturise and soothe dry, rough, flaky or mildly irritated skin. It is commonly used for everyday dryness of the hands, face and body, for skin that feels tight after washing, and as a soothing layer after mild sun exposure or minor irritation.

How It Works

Aloe vera gel comes from the leaf of the aloe plant. It holds water on the skin surface and has a cooling, calming feel. Vitamin E Acetate is a stable form of vitamin E, an antioxidant (a substance that helps protect cells from damage) that softens the skin and helps it keep its natural moisture barrier. Together they help reduce water loss and leave the skin smoother.

Dosage and Administration

For external use on the skin only. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin and massage gently until absorbed, usually 2 to 3 times a day or as often as needed. It works best right after bathing, while the skin is still slightly damp. Follow the directions on the label.

Interactions

No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known. If you use other creams on the same area, such as steroid or acne creams, leave a gap of a few minutes between products or ask your pharmacist which to apply first.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to aloe, plants of the lily family, vitamin E or any ingredient in the product. Do not apply to deep wounds, serious burns or infected skin.

Side Effects

Most people use it without problems. A few may get mild stinging, redness, itching or a rash where it is applied, which usually means sensitivity to an ingredient. Stop using it if this happens.

Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash, as these may be signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Small amounts applied to the skin are generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If breastfeeding, do not apply to the nipple area just before a feed, or wash it off first.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For external use only. Do not swallow.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes; rinse with water if it gets in.
  • Test on a small patch of skin first if you have sensitive skin.
  • See a doctor if dryness or irritation does not improve within 2 weeks, or if the skin cracks, bleeds or looks infected.

Overdose

Using too much on the skin is unlikely to be harmful, though it may feel greasy. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, rinse the mouth and contact a doctor or poison centre.

Therapeutic Class
