Cefprozil
Indications
Cefprozil is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as sore throat and tonsillitis, middle ear infection, sinusitis, bronchitis that has become infected, and skin and soft tissue infections. It does not work against viral infections such as colds or flu.
How It Works
It stops bacteria from building their cell walls, so the bacteria break apart and die.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: usually 250 to 500 mg every 12 hours, or 500 mg once a day for some infections, for 5 to 10 days as the doctor advises. Sore throat and tonsillitis are usually treated for 10 days. Children: dose depends on body weight, as prescribed. People with kidney problems may need a lower dose. It can be taken with or without food. Complete the full course even if you feel better.
Interactions
- Probenecid raises cefprozil levels in the blood.
- Aminoglycoside antibiotics (such as Gentamicin) and strong diuretics may increase the risk of kidney problems.
- It may increase the effect of Warfarin; extra blood tests may be needed.
- It may make the oral typhoid vaccine less effective.
Contraindications
Allergy to cefprozil or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Tell your doctor if you have ever had a serious allergic reaction to penicillin.
Side Effects
Common: diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, rash, dizziness and vaginal thrush. Liver test changes can occur.
Get urgent medical help for:
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, or widespread hives
- Severe or bloody diarrhoea, even weeks after finishing the course
- Blistering or peeling skin, or a rash with fever and joint pain
Pregnancy and Lactation
Generally considered acceptable in pregnancy when a doctor decides it is needed. Small amounts pass into breast milk; breastfeeding can usually continue, but watch the baby for diarrhoea or thrush.
Precautions and Warnings
- Tell your doctor about kidney disease or a history of bowel inflammation (colitis).
- The liquid form may contain aspartame, which is not suitable for people with phenylketonuria.
- Do not share antibiotics or keep them for later use.
Overdose
May cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea. Very high levels, especially in kidney failure, can cause fits. Seek medical help; it can be removed by dialysis.
Therapeutic Class
Second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.
Storage
Tablets: store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Liquid after mixing: keep in the fridge at 2 to 8°C and throw away any left after 14 days. Keep out of the reach of children.
