Zinc
What It Is Used For
Zinc is a mineral the body needs for growth, healing and immunity. Given with oral saline (ORS), it shortens diarrhoea in children and lowers the chance of it coming back. It is also used to treat zinc deficiency.
How to Take It
Children with diarrhoea, alongside ORS: under 6 months 10 mg once a day, 6 months and older 20 mg once a day, for 10 to 14 days even after the diarrhoea stops. Adults with deficiency: as your doctor advises. Take it with or after food if it upsets the stomach.
Who Should Not Take It
Do not take it if you are allergic to zinc products.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset and a metallic taste, mostly at higher doses or on an empty stomach.
Precautions
Do not take high doses for a long time without a doctor; too much zinc can lower copper in the body. Keep giving ORS and food during diarrhoea, and see a doctor if a child is very weak, has blood in the stool or cannot drink.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Safe at the usual recommended doses.
Interactions
Zinc reduces the absorption of Tetracycline, Doxycycline and Ciprofloxacin; take them at least 2 hours apart. Iron and calcium can reduce zinc absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, out of the reach of children.
