Indications
This is a vitamin and mineral supplement made for women who are planning a pregnancy, are pregnant or are breastfeeding. It combines 10 vitamins and 6 minerals, typically including Folic Acid, vitamins of the B group, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Iron, Zinc, Iodine and Calcium, to help meet the extra needs of the mother and growing baby. It does not replace a balanced diet.
How It Works
During pregnancy and breastfeeding the body needs more of several nutrients. Folic Acid helps the baby’s brain and spinal cord form normally and lowers the risk of neural tube defects. Iron helps make haemoglobin and prevents anaemia. Iodine supports the baby’s brain development, and Vitamin D and Calcium support healthy bones. The other vitamins and minerals help energy use, immunity and tissue growth.
Dosage and Administration
The usual dose is one tablet or capsule a day with food and water, or as directed on the label or by your doctor. Ideally start before conception and continue through pregnancy and breastfeeding as advised. Taking it with a meal can reduce stomach upset. Do not take two doses to make up for a missed one.
Interactions
Iron, Calcium and Zinc can reduce the absorption of some medicines, including Levothyroxine, antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin and Doxycycline, and medicines for osteoporosis. Take these at least 2 to 4 hours apart from the supplement. Antacids and tea or coffee taken at the same time can lower iron absorption. Avoid taking other supplements that contain Vitamin A or iron unless your doctor advises it.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient, or if you have iron overload (such as haemochromatosis), a high blood calcium level, or Vitamin A or D excess. People with these or with kidney disease should ask a doctor first.
Side Effects
Most people take it without problems. Possible side effects include:
- Nausea or stomach upset
- Constipation or, less often, diarrhoea
- Dark or black stools, caused by the iron and harmless
- An unpleasant taste
Get urgent medical help if you develop a rash with swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or severe stomach pain with vomiting.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This product is designed for use before and during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Take only the recommended dose, because too much Vitamin A can harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor about all supplements you take during pregnancy.
Precautions and Warnings
Do not take more than the recommended dose or combine it with other multivitamins unless advised. If you have anaemia, thyroid disease or a special diet, your doctor may adjust your supplements. Iron products are dangerous to young children, so keep them well out of reach.
Overdose
An overdose in an adult may cause stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Accidental swallowing of iron-containing tablets by a child is a medical emergency, even if the child seems well; seek emergency care at once.
Therapeutic Class
Prenatal vitamin and mineral supplement.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the container tightly closed.
