10 Vitamin & 6 Mineral [Pregnancy and Breast Feeding Formula]

Indications

This is a multivitamin and multimineral supplement designed for women who are planning pregnancy, are pregnant or are breastfeeding. It contains 10 vitamins and 6 minerals, typically including Folic Acid, Iron, Iodine, Zinc, Calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and other B vitamins. It helps meet the higher nutritional needs at this time and helps prevent deficiencies such as folate deficiency (linked to neural tube defects in the baby) and iron deficiency anaemia.

How It Works

Each nutrient supports a specific need. Folic Acid helps the baby’s brain and spinal cord form properly in early pregnancy. Iron is needed to make haemoglobin for the extra blood volume of pregnancy. Iodine supports the baby’s brain development and thyroid function. Calcium and vitamin D support bones and teeth. B vitamins help release energy from food and make red blood cells. Zinc and other minerals support growth and the immune system.

Dosage and Administration

Usually one tablet or capsule a day with or after a meal, with water, or as directed on the label or by your doctor. Ideally start before conception and continue through pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not take more than the recommended dose, and do not combine with other multivitamins unless your doctor advises it.

Interactions

  • Iron, Calcium and Zinc can reduce the absorption of Levothyroxine, tetracycline antibiotics (such as Doxycycline) and quinolone antibiotics (such as Ciprofloxacin); take these at least 2 to 4 hours apart.
  • Antacids, tea, coffee and milk taken at the same time can reduce iron absorption.
  • Folic Acid may reduce the effect of some anti-seizure medicines such as Phenytoin; tell your doctor.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient.
  • Iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis, or anaemia not caused by iron deficiency unless advised by a doctor.
  • High blood calcium or severe kidney disease unless advised by a doctor.

Side Effects

Most women tolerate it well. Some may have nausea, stomach upset, constipation, diarrhoea or dark stools (from the iron, which is harmless). Taking it with food can help. Allergic reactions are rare.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing), or if a child accidentally swallows tablets, as iron overdose is dangerous in children.

Pregnancy and Lactation

This product is intended for use before and during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, at the recommended dose. Avoid taking extra vitamin A supplements or fish liver oils during pregnancy, as high doses of vitamin A can harm the baby. Your doctor may advise a higher dose of Folic Acid or Iron in certain situations.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Do not exceed the stated dose.
  • Tell your doctor about any other supplements you take, to avoid doubling up on iron or vitamin A.
  • A supplement does not replace a balanced diet.
  • If you have a thyroid disorder, ask your doctor before taking products with iodine.

Overdose

Taking too many tablets, especially by children, can cause iron poisoning with vomiting, stomach pain, bloody diarrhoea and drowsiness, which can be life-threatening. Seek emergency medical help immediately and take the pack with you.

Therapeutic Class
