Indications

This is a multivitamin and multimineral supplement (10 vitamins and 6 minerals) designed for women who are planning pregnancy, pregnant or breastfeeding. It helps meet the higher needs for nutrients such as folic acid, iron, iodine, zinc, calcium, vitamin D and B vitamins during these times, supporting the mother’s health and the baby’s growth and development.

How It Works

The vitamins and minerals in the tablet replace or top up what may be missing from the diet. Folic acid helps prevent neural tube defects (birth defects of the brain and spine). Iron helps make red blood cells and prevent anaemia. Iodine supports the baby’s brain and thyroid development. Calcium and vitamin D support bones and teeth, and B vitamins and zinc support energy, growth and immunity.

Dosage and Administration

Usually one tablet or capsule daily with a meal and a glass of water, or as directed on the label or by your doctor. Ideally start before conception and continue throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not take extra doses to catch up. A doctor may prescribe extra iron or folic acid separately if needed.

Interactions

Iron, calcium and zinc can reduce the absorption of Levothyroxine, Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin and other quinolones, and Bisphosphonates; take these at least 2 to 4 hours apart. Antacids and tea or coffee taken at the same time can reduce iron absorption. Avoid taking other multivitamins at the same time unless advised, to prevent excess intake.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient.
  • Iron overload conditions (such as haemochromatosis) or certain anaemias not caused by iron deficiency, such as thalassaemia, unless a doctor advises.
  • High blood calcium or vitamin overdose conditions.

Side Effects

Mild nausea, constipation, stomach upset or dark stools (from iron) may occur; taking the tablet with food often helps. Urine may become bright yellow because of riboflavin, which is harmless. Allergic reactions are rare.

Get urgent medical help if a child swallows tablets (iron poisoning can be dangerous), or for signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

This product is made for use in pregnancy and breastfeeding at the recommended dose. Do not take more than directed, and avoid other supplements containing vitamin A unless your doctor advises, as too much vitamin A can harm the baby.

Precautions and Warnings

A supplement does not replace a balanced diet. Tell your doctor about thyroid problems, kidney disease or anaemia. Keep regular antenatal check-ups and blood tests.

Overdose

Taking many tablets can cause iron or vitamin poisoning, with vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea. Iron overdose is especially dangerous for children. Seek medical help immediately.

Therapeutic Class

Multivitamin and multimineral supplement (prenatal and lactation formula).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
