Indications
This is a multivitamin and multimineral supplement containing 19 vitamins and minerals, designed mainly for women who are planning a pregnancy, are pregnant or are breastfeeding. It helps meet the higher nutrient needs of these periods and helps prevent deficiencies of nutrients such as folic acid, iron, iodine, vitamin D and B vitamins.
How It Works
Each nutrient supports a different body process. Folic acid helps the baby’s brain and spinal cord form normally and lowers the risk of neural tube defects. Iron is needed to make red blood cells and prevent anaemia. Iodine supports thyroid function and the baby’s brain development. Calcium, vitamin D and magnesium support bones and teeth. B vitamins help turn food into energy, and zinc, copper, selenium and vitamins C and E support the immune system and tissue repair.
Dosage and Administration
Usually 1 tablet or capsule a day, or as directed on the label or by your doctor. Take it with or after a meal and a glass of water, which reduces stomach upset. Ideally start at least 1 to 3 months before trying to conceive and continue through pregnancy and breastfeeding if advised. Do not take more than the recommended amount.
Interactions
Iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (such as Tetracycline, Doxycycline and Ciprofloxacin), Levothyroxine and bisphosphonates; take these at least 2 to 4 hours apart. Tea, coffee and antacids reduce iron absorption. Avoid taking other vitamin A or multivitamin products at the same time unless your doctor advises it.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient
- Iron overload disorders such as haemochromatosis, or anaemia not caused by iron deficiency
- High blood calcium or high vitamin A or D levels
- Severe kidney or liver disease, unless a doctor advises
Side Effects
Most people have no problems. Some may have nausea, stomach upset, constipation, diarrhoea or a metallic taste. Iron can make stools dark or black, which is harmless.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, or severe stomach pain or vomiting.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This product is designed for use before and during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Use it at the recommended dose only, because too much vitamin A can harm an unborn baby. Ask your doctor if you are already taking other supplements.
Precautions and Warnings
Supplements do not replace a balanced diet. Tell your doctor if you have kidney stones, a thyroid problem or any long-term illness. Keep iron-containing products away from children: accidental iron overdose is a common cause of serious poisoning in young children.
Overdose
Taking many tablets at once, especially by a child, can cause iron poisoning with vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and drowsiness. Seek medical help immediately, even if the person seems well at first.
