Indications
Almitrine Bismesylate is available in Bangladesh in combination with Raubasine. The combination is used in older adults to help with symptoms linked to reduced blood and oxygen supply to the brain, such as poor memory, poor concentration and dizziness, during recovery after a stroke, and for some inner ear (balance) and eye (retina) circulation problems. Evidence of benefit is modest, and it is not a treatment for dementia.
How It Works
Almitrine stimulates sensors in the arteries of the neck (the carotid bodies) that detect oxygen levels. This improves breathing and helps the lungs match air flow to blood flow, so more oxygen reaches the blood. Raubasine relaxes small blood vessels. Together they are intended to increase oxygen delivery to the brain.
Dosage and Administration
Take as prescribed. The usual adult dose of the combination tablet is 1 tablet twice daily, morning and evening, after meals. The doctor should review treatment regularly, and it is usually not continued for long periods.
Interactions
Do not take with other medicines containing Almitrine. Use with care with medicines that lower blood pressure, and with MAO inhibitors (an older type of antidepressant). Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.
Contraindications
Do not take if you are allergic to Almitrine or Raubasine, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have severe liver disease, or if you already have nerve damage in the hands or feet (peripheral neuropathy).
Side Effects
- Nausea, heartburn, stomach discomfort
- Feeling of heaviness in the stomach, loss of appetite
- Palpitations, sleep problems, restlessness
- With long-term use: weight loss and nerve damage causing tingling, numbness or burning in the feet and legs
Get urgent medical help if you notice tingling, numbness or weakness in the legs, unexplained weight loss, breathlessness, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. Stop the medicine and see your doctor if you notice any of these.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
Because of the risk of nerve damage and weight loss, regulators in some countries have withdrawn this combination. It should only be used under a doctor’s supervision, for the shortest time, with regular check-ups including weight. Use with care in liver disease.
Overdose
Overdose may cause fast breathing, palpitations, low blood pressure and restlessness. Seek emergency medical help.
