Indications
Aluminium Oxide is an antacid used to relieve acidity, heartburn, indigestion and stomach discomfort, and to ease the pain of gastritis and peptic ulcers. It is almost always combined with Magnesium Hydroxide, and often with Simethicone for gas and bloating.
How It Works
It neutralises (cancels out) excess stomach acid, which reduces burning and pain. Aluminium tends to cause constipation and magnesium tends to loosen the bowels, so the two are combined to balance each other.
Dosage and Administration
Strengths differ between products, so follow the label. Adults: suspension usually 10 to 20 ml, or 1 to 2 tablets chewed well, taken 1 to 3 hours after meals and at bedtime, or when symptoms occur, up to 4 times a day. Shake suspensions well. Do not use regularly for more than 2 weeks without a doctor’s advice. Children: only as advised by a doctor.
Interactions
Antacids can reduce the absorption of many medicines, including Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin and other quinolones, iron tablets, Levothyroxine, Digoxin, Ketoconazole, Itraconazole and some HIV medicines. Take other medicines at least 2 hours before or after the antacid (4 hours for quinolone antibiotics).
Contraindications
Allergy to any ingredient, severe kidney disease, and low blood phosphate levels.
Side Effects
Constipation or, because of the magnesium, loose stools are the most common effects. Long-term heavy use can lower blood phosphate, causing weakness, loss of appetite and bone pain. Get urgent medical help if you vomit blood, pass black or tarry stools, have severe or worsening stomach pain, or show signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Occasional use at usual doses is generally considered acceptable in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask a doctor before using it regularly.
Precautions and Warnings
People with kidney disease should use it only with medical advice, as aluminium and magnesium can build up in the body. Avoid long-term use without supervision. See a doctor if symptoms persist, keep coming back, or come with weight loss or difficulty swallowing.
Overdose
Too much may cause constipation, diarrhoea or stomach discomfort. In people with kidney problems, overuse can cause aluminium or magnesium to build up. Seek medical advice if a large amount has been taken.
Therapeutic Class
