Indications
Ammonium Bicarbonate is mainly found in combination digestive powders, together with Sodium Bicarbonate, Gentian, Ginger and Nux vomica. These are used for indigestion, loss of appetite, bloating, wind and mild acidity or heartburn.
How It Works
Ammonium Bicarbonate is a mild alkali. It neutralises some stomach acid and releases carbon dioxide gas, which may help relieve fullness by bringing up wind. In combination products, Sodium Bicarbonate adds to the antacid effect, while the bitter herbs Gentian and Ginger help stimulate appetite and digestion.
Dosage and Administration
Use exactly as directed on the pack or by your doctor, usually a measured amount mixed in water after meals. Do not take more than directed and do not use for more than 2 weeks without medical advice. Not for children unless a doctor advises.
Interactions
Antacids can reduce the absorption of some medicines, such as Iron, Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin, Ketoconazole and Levothyroxine. Keep at least 2 hours between them. Ask your pharmacist before using it with other antacid or digestive products.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
- Severe kidney or liver disease.
- Conditions where the blood is already too alkaline (metabolic alkalosis).
- Young children, unless a doctor advises.
Side Effects
Belching, bloating, wind and mild stomach upset are the most common. Large amounts may cause nausea.
Get urgent medical help if you vomit blood, pass black or tarry stools, have severe stomach pain, difficulty swallowing or unexplained weight loss, as these need proper investigation. Also seek urgent help for muscle twitching, stiffness or confusion after taking the product.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a doctor advises, especially combination powders containing Nux vomica.
Precautions and Warnings
Products with Sodium Bicarbonate contain a lot of sodium, so use with care if you have high blood pressure, heart failure, kidney disease or are on a low-salt diet. Combination powders that contain Nux vomica must never be taken in more than the stated dose. See a doctor if indigestion keeps coming back or does not improve within 2 weeks.
Overdose
Too much can make the blood too alkaline, causing nausea, vomiting, muscle twitching, cramps and confusion. Products containing Nux vomica can be dangerous in overdose. Get urgent medical help.
Therapeutic Class
Antacid and digestive (alkalinising agent).
