Indications
Bacillus Clausii spores are a probiotic (live, friendly bacteria). They are used to help treat and prevent diarrhoea, especially diarrhoea caused by antibiotics or by an upset in the normal balance of gut bacteria, and to support recovery of the gut flora in adults and children. They are used alongside oral rehydration solution (ORS), not instead of it.
How It Works
The product contains spores of Bacillus clausii, which survive stomach acid and many common antibiotics. In the intestine the spores become active bacteria that help restore the normal gut flora, compete with harmful germs and produce some vitamins, especially B vitamins.
Dosage and Administration
For oral suspension vials, adults usually take 2 to 3 vials a day and children 1 to 2 vials a day, or as directed on the label or by the doctor. Shake the vial, open it and drink the contents directly or mix with a little water, milk or juice. Take at regular intervals during the day. When used with antibiotics, take it in the gap between antibiotic doses. Capsules are taken as directed on the label. Never inject the suspension.
Interactions
The spores resist most antibiotics, but it is still best to take it between antibiotic doses. No important interactions with other medicines are known.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Bacillus clausii or any ingredient
- Use with caution, and only on medical advice, in people with a very weak immune system or a central venous line
Side Effects
It is usually very well tolerated. Rarely, allergic reactions such as rash, itching or hives can occur. In people with a severely weakened immune system, very rare cases of blood infection with the bacteria have been reported.
Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or if diarrhoea is accompanied by blood in the stool, high fever, signs of dehydration (very dry mouth, sunken eyes, little urine, drowsiness), or lasts more than 2 days in a child.
Pregnancy and Lactation
It is not absorbed into the blood and is generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but ask your doctor before use.
Precautions and Warnings
Replace fluids with ORS during diarrhoea; dehydration is the main danger, especially in children. See a doctor if diarrhoea is severe or does not improve. Small particles seen in the vial are clumps of spores and are normal.
Overdose
No serious effects are expected from taking more than the recommended amount. Contact a doctor if you are worried.
Therapeutic Class

Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze. Use an opened vial straight away.
