Indications
Bacopa monnieri, known locally as Brahmi, is a small creeping herb used in Ayurvedic medicine. It is traditionally used to support memory, concentration and learning, and to ease stress and anxiety. It is also found in brain tonic supplements, often together with Lecithin or other nutrients. Some small studies suggest a modest benefit for memory after several weeks of use, but the evidence is limited.
How It Works
Bacopa contains compounds called bacosides. These are thought to protect nerve cells from damage, support the chemical messengers involved in memory (such as acetylcholine), and help the brain cope with stress. Any benefit usually appears slowly, over 8 to 12 weeks.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. It is best taken with food to reduce stomach upset.
Interactions
- It may add to the effect of sedatives and sleeping pills.
- It may affect thyroid hormone levels; people taking Levothyroxine or Carbimazole should ask their doctor.
- It may interact with medicines that act on acetylcholine, such as Donepezil, or with anticholinergic medicines such as Oxybutynin.
- Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you use.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Bacopa or any ingredient.
- Use with care, and only with medical advice, if you have a slow heart rate, a stomach ulcer, asthma or a thyroid disorder.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include nausea, stomach cramps, loose stools, dry mouth and tiredness. Taking it with food often helps.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, widespread rash), fainting, or a very slow or irregular heartbeat.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough information on safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid use unless your doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
- Memory problems that are getting worse need a medical check; do not rely on supplements alone.
- For children, use only on a doctor’s advice.
- Stop use a few weeks before planned surgery and tell your surgeon.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause stomach upset, diarrhoea and drowsiness. Seek medical advice if a large amount has been taken.
