Indications

Belleric is the fruit of Terminalia bellirica, known as Bibhitaki or Bahera. It is one of the three fruits in Triphala, a classical Ayurvedic and Unani powder, and is also used in other herbal preparations. Traditionally it has been used for constipation and digestive complaints, cough, sore throat and hoarseness, and to support eye and hair health. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

The fruit contains tannins (such as gallic and ellagic acid), glycosides and fixed oils. Tannins have an astringent effect, while other compounds give a mild laxative action when the fruit is taken in larger amounts. Laboratory studies show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity, but effects in people are not well established.

Dosage and Administration

Take the product as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic or Unani practitioner. Triphala-type powders are usually taken with warm water, often at bedtime. Do not exceed the recommended amount or use it for long periods without advice.

Interactions

Tannin-rich herbs may reduce the absorption of iron supplements and some other medicines, so take them a few hours apart. It may slightly lower blood sugar, so people taking diabetes medicines such as Metformin or Insulin should check their sugar levels. Tell your doctor about all herbal products you use.

Contraindications

Do not use it if you are allergic to it. Avoid it if you have diarrhoea, bowel blockage or inflammatory bowel disease. Not for young children unless a practitioner advises it.

Side Effects

Possible effects include loose stools, stomach cramps, wind and dry mouth. Allergic reactions are rare.

Get urgent medical help if you have severe or bloody diarrhoea, severe stomach pain, signs of dehydration, or swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as its laxative effect and safety in these times have not been established.

Precautions and Warnings

Long-lasting constipation, cough or change in bowel habit should be checked by a doctor. Do not rely on herbal laxatives every day for long periods. Buy only from reliable sources, as herbal powders may be contaminated.

Overdose

Too much may cause diarrhoea and dehydration. Drink fluids and seek medical help if symptoms are severe or a child has swallowed a large amount.
