Indications
Black cardamom (Amomum subulatum), known locally as boro elach, is a smoky-flavoured spice. In Unani and Ayurvedic practice its seeds are used as an ingredient in preparations for indigestion, wind, nausea, loss of appetite, bad breath and mild cough, including some digestive mixtures for children. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it should not be relied on to treat any disease.
How It Works
The seeds contain an aromatic oil rich in cineole and related compounds. These are thought to stimulate the flow of digestive juices, relax the gut muscle so that gas passes more easily (a carminative effect) and help loosen mucus in the chest. Laboratory studies show antioxidant activity, but benefits in people are not proven.
Dosage and Administration
Black cardamom is usually taken as part of a combined herbal product. Use it only as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. For children, follow the label exactly and use the measuring device supplied.
Interactions
No important interactions are known at normal food amounts. As with many herbs, large medicinal amounts should be used with care alongside blood-thinning medicines such as Warfarin, and you should tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you take.
Contraindications
- Allergy to cardamom or ginger-family plants.
- Gallstones, unless a doctor agrees, as cardamom is traditionally said to be able to trigger gallstone pain in large amounts.
Side Effects
In usual amounts it is generally well tolerated. Allergic skin reactions, heartburn or stomach upset can occur occasionally.
Get urgent medical help if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, or severe pain in the upper right part of the tummy.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Black cardamom used as a spice in food is considered safe. There is not enough information on concentrated medicinal amounts during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so ask a doctor before using such products.
Precautions and Warnings
Herbal products are not a substitute for medical care. Ongoing indigestion, weight loss, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or black or bloody stools need a doctor’s assessment. Do not exceed the labelled dose.
Overdose
Taking far more than directed may cause stomach upset or heartburn. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, and take the pack with you.
