Indications
Calcium d-Pantothenate is a stable, calcium salt form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). It is used in vitamin B-complex and multivitamin products to prevent or correct vitamin B deficiency, for example during poor diet, recovery from illness, alcohol misuse or increased needs. True pantothenic acid deficiency on its own is rare because the vitamin is found in most foods.
How It Works
In the body, pantothenic acid is used to make coenzyme A, a molecule needed to release energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins and to build fatty acids, cholesterol, hormones and the nerve messenger acetylcholine. The calcium salt simply provides the vitamin in a stable form.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by your doctor. The usual daily need for adults is about 5 mg; B-complex products often contain 5 to 50 mg. Take with or after food.
Interactions
No important interactions with medicines are known. Combination B-complex products may contain other vitamins, such as Pyridoxine (B6), that can interact with some medicines like Levodopa; check the label or ask a pharmacist.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient. People with haemophilia should ask a doctor before high-dose use, as it may slightly prolong bleeding time.
Side Effects
Usually very well tolerated. Large doses (several grams) may cause mild diarrhoea or stomach upset. Allergic reactions are rare.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash with swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safe at normal dietary and supplement amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding (the recommended intake is about 6 to 7 mg a day). Avoid very high doses unless a doctor advises.
Precautions and Warnings
- Vitamin supplements do not replace a balanced diet.
- Tiredness, numbness or burning feet can have many causes; see a doctor if symptoms persist.
- Keep vitamin products out of reach of children, especially those containing iron.
Overdose
Pantothenic acid has very low toxicity. Very large amounts may cause diarrhoea. If a child swallows a multivitamin product, contact a doctor, as other ingredients such as iron can be dangerous.
