Indications

Chondroitin Sulfate Sodium is a natural building block of cartilage, the smooth tissue that cushions the ends of bones inside joints. Taken by mouth, usually combined with Glucosamine and other nutrients, it is used as a supplement to support joint comfort and movement in osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis), especially of the knee and hip. In a separate form, a sterile viscoelastic (thick, gel-like) solution containing Chondroitin Sulfate is used by eye surgeons during cataract and other eye operations to protect the inside of the eye.

How It Works

Chondroitin helps cartilage hold water, which keeps it springy and able to absorb shock. It may also slow the enzymes that break cartilage down and calm mild inflammation in the joint. Any benefit builds slowly over several weeks, and research results are mixed, so it does not work for everyone. In eye surgery, the viscoelastic solution holds space inside the eye and coats delicate tissues so they are protected from instruments.

Dosage and Administration

Oral joint supplements: a typical adult intake is 800 to 1,200 mg of Chondroitin Sulfate per day, taken once daily or in divided doses with food, or as directed on the label or by your doctor. Allow 2 to 3 months to judge whether it helps.

Eye surgery solution: used only by an eye surgeon in the operating theatre, in the amount the surgeon decides.

Interactions

Chondroitin may slightly increase the blood-thinning effect of Warfarin and possibly other anticoagulants, so your INR (blood clotting test) may need closer checks if you take both. Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you use.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to Chondroitin Sulfate or any other ingredient in the product. People allergic to shellfish should check the label, because some combination products also contain Glucosamine made from shellfish.

Side Effects

Oral chondroitin is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include:

  • Mild stomach upset, nausea, bloating or diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Mild swelling of the eyelids or legs (rare)

After eye surgery, a short rise in eye pressure can occur; your surgeon will check for this.

Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash, or unusual bleeding or bruising if you also take a blood thinner.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is not enough safety information on oral chondroitin supplements in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so avoid them unless your doctor advises otherwise. Use of the viscoelastic solution during eye surgery is decided by the surgeon.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Talk to your doctor first if you have asthma, a bleeding disorder, or take blood thinners.
  • Some products contain sodium or other minerals; people on a salt-restricted diet should check the label.
  • This is a supplement, not a cure, and does not replace medicines prescribed for arthritis pain.
  • See a doctor if joint pain is severe, sudden, or comes with redness, heat or fever.

Overdose

Taking more than recommended is unlikely to be dangerous but may cause stomach upset or diarrhoea. If a large amount has been swallowed, or a child has taken it, contact a doctor for advice.

Therapeutic Class

Joint health supplement (glycosaminoglycan); ophthalmic surgical viscoelastic agent

Storage
