Indications

Coriandrum sativum (coriander, known in Bangla as Dhonia and in Unani medicine as Kishneez) is a common kitchen herb whose seeds and leaves are also used in Unani, Ayurvedic and folk medicine. As a medicine it is traditionally used for indigestion, gas, bloating, loss of appetite, nausea and mild diarrhoea, and in Unani medicine for its cooling effect, for example in excess heat, palpitations, sleeplessness and mild anxiety. It is often one ingredient in Unani compound preparations. Scientific evidence for medical use is limited.

How It Works

Coriander seeds contain an aromatic oil rich in linalool, as well as fibre and plant antioxidants. These may relax the muscles of the gut, ease gas and cramping, increase the flow of digestive juices and have mild calming, antimicrobial and blood sugar lowering effects in laboratory and animal studies.

Dosage and Administration

Using coriander as a spice in food is safe for most people. As a medicine, take products containing it as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. Products are usually taken once or twice a day, with or after food.

Interactions

  • Medicines for diabetes such as Metformin, Gliclazide or Insulin: medicinal amounts may lower blood sugar further.
  • Medicines for high blood pressure: possible extra lowering of blood pressure.
  • Sedatives: large amounts may add to drowsiness.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to coriander or related plants such as fennel, aniseed, cumin, dill, celery or carrot.
  • Medicinal amounts in pregnancy, unless advised by a doctor.

Side Effects

Coriander is usually well tolerated. Rarely it may cause allergic reactions, including skin rash, itching or breathing difficulty. Handling fresh coriander can occasionally cause skin irritation or increased sensitivity to sunlight.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Coriander in normal food amounts is safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. There is not enough information on larger medicinal amounts, so avoid them unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Precautions and Warnings

  • People with diabetes should check their blood sugar when starting a product containing coriander.
  • Stop medicinal use about two weeks before planned surgery, as it may affect blood sugar.
  • Persistent stomach pain, vomiting, blood in the stool or weight loss need medical attention.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely. Very large amounts may cause stomach upset or low blood sugar. If a large amount of a medicinal product has been taken, contact a doctor or the nearest hospital and take the pack with you.
