Indications

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) gives dates, a well known fruit. Dates, and sometimes the pollen or seeds of the palm, are used as ingredients in Unani and Ayurvedic preparations, often in sweet tonics and powders. Traditionally they have been used as a nourishing tonic for weakness and tiredness, to support women’s reproductive health and recovery after childbirth, to support male vitality, and to ease constipation. Apart from their value as a food, scientific evidence for these medicinal uses is limited.

How It Works

Dates are rich in natural sugars that give quick energy, fibre that helps bowel movements, and minerals such as potassium, magnesium and some iron. They also contain antioxidant plant compounds. Date palm pollen contains plant sterols and flavonoids that, in animal studies, may affect reproductive hormones, but this is not well proven in people.

Dosage and Administration

When part of a medicinal product, take it as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. Dates eaten as food in normal amounts are safe for most people.

Interactions

No important interactions are known. Because dates are high in sugar and potassium, people taking diabetes medicines, or medicines that raise potassium such as Spironolactone, should be aware of the amount they consume.

Contraindications

Do not use it if you are allergic to dates or palm pollen. People with kidney failure who must limit potassium should ask their doctor before regular use.

Side Effects

Eating large amounts may cause bloating, wind, loose stools or a rise in blood sugar. Some people are allergic to date fruit or palm pollen, which can cause itching, sneezing or wheezing.

Get urgent medical help if you have swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a severe rash.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Dates eaten as food are generally safe and nutritious during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Medicinal products containing date palm should only be used if a doctor agrees.

Precautions and Warnings

People with diabetes should count the sugar in date-based products and check their blood sugar. Sweet herbal tonics can contribute to tooth decay, so rinse the mouth after use. See a doctor for ongoing weakness or fertility concerns.

Overdose

Too much may cause stomach upset, diarrhoea or high blood sugar in people with diabetes. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe.

Therapeutic Class

Unani and Ayurvedic herbal ingredient (traditional nutritive tonic).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
