Indications
Dibasic calcium phosphate (listed in some products as diabasic calcium phosphate) supplies both calcium and phosphorus. It is used to prevent and treat calcium and phosphorus deficiency, and to support bone and tooth health in conditions such as rickets, osteomalacia and osteoporosis, often together with vitamin D. It is also used when calcium needs are higher, such as during pregnancy, breastfeeding and growth.
How It Works
Calcium and phosphorus are the main minerals that make bones and teeth hard. Calcium is also needed for nerves, muscles and the heart, and phosphorus for energy use in cells.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: as directed on the product label or by the doctor, commonly 1 tablet once or twice a day with or after food. Children: only as prescribed. Do not take more than the recommended dose.
Interactions
Calcium can reduce the absorption of Tetracycline and Doxycycline, quinolone antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin, Levothyroxine, bisphosphonates such as Alendronate, and Iron. Take these at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after this product, or as their leaflets advise. Thiazide diuretics can raise blood calcium, and high calcium increases the risk of side effects from Digoxin. Aluminium-containing antacids can reduce phosphate absorption.
Contraindications
- High blood calcium (hypercalcaemia) or high blood phosphate.
- Calcium kidney stones or high urine calcium.
- Severe kidney disease.
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
Constipation, bloating, nausea or stomach upset may occur. Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing) or signs of high blood calcium, such as severe thirst, passing a lot of urine, vomiting, confusion, muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Calcium and phosphorus supplements are commonly used during pregnancy and breastfeeding at recommended doses. Take only the dose your doctor advises.
Precautions and Warnings
Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, a history of kidney stones, sarcoidosis or heart disease. People with kidney problems may build up phosphate and should use it only with medical advice. Do not combine several calcium or vitamin D products without advice.
Overdose
Too much can cause high blood calcium or phosphate, with nausea, vomiting, thirst, constipation, confusion and an irregular heartbeat. Stop taking it and seek medical help.
