Indications
Eggshell calcium is a calcium supplement made from purified, finely powdered hen eggshells. It is usually combined with Vitamin D3 and is used to prevent and treat calcium deficiency, to support bone health in osteoporosis and osteopenia (thin bones), and to meet extra calcium needs in pregnancy, breastfeeding, growing children and older adults.
How It Works
Eggshell powder is made mostly of calcium carbonate, with small amounts of other minerals such as magnesium and strontium. Calcium is the main building block of bones and teeth and is also needed for muscles, nerves and blood clotting. Vitamin D helps the gut absorb calcium and helps it be laid down in bone.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by your doctor. Products commonly provide about 500 mg to 1,000 mg of calcium a day, often split into two doses. Take with or just after meals for better absorption. Total calcium from food and supplements for most adults should not go above about 2,000 mg to 2,500 mg a day.
Interactions
- Calcium reduces the absorption of Tetracycline and Quinolone antibiotics (such as Ciprofloxacin), Levothyroxine, Iron, Zinc and Bisphosphonates (such as Alendronate); take these at least 2 to 4 hours apart.
- Thiazide diuretics (such as Hydrochlorothiazide) can raise blood calcium levels.
- Calcium can increase the risk of side effects of Digoxin.
Contraindications
- Allergy to egg or any ingredient.
- High blood or urine calcium levels.
- Calcium-containing kidney stones, or severe kidney disease.
- Conditions with too much vitamin D.
Side Effects
Constipation, wind, bloating and mild stomach discomfort are the most common side effects.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of high calcium (severe thirst, passing a lot of urine, nausea, vomiting, confusion, muscle weakness), severe pain in the side or back (possible kidney stone), or a severe allergic reaction.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Calcium and Vitamin D supplements at normal recommended doses are safe and often advised in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not exceed the dose your doctor recommends.
Precautions and Warnings
- People with egg allergy should avoid eggshell-based products.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, kidney stones or sarcoidosis.
- Blood calcium may need checking during long-term high-dose use.
- Drink enough water to reduce constipation and kidney stone risk.
Overdose
Taking too much can cause high calcium levels with nausea, vomiting, constipation, thirst, confusion and, in severe cases, heart rhythm problems. Stop the supplement and contact a doctor.
