Indications
Emblica officinalis (Amla, Indian gooseberry) is a fruit widely used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. Preparations made from it (tablets, capsules, powders or syrups) are traditionally used as a source of natural vitamin C, a general tonic, to support immunity, digestion and appetite, and for hair and skin health. Some studies suggest mild benefits for blood sugar and cholesterol, but scientific evidence is limited and it does not cure any disease.
How It Works
Amla is rich in vitamin C and plant antioxidants such as tannins and polyphenols. These help protect cells from damage, support healing and the immune system, and may have a mild effect on digestion and blood fats.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Tablets or capsules are usually taken once or twice a day after meals with water. Syrups and powders should be measured as shown on the pack.
Interactions
Amla may slightly lower blood sugar and slow blood clotting, so take care with diabetes medicines and blood thinners such as Warfarin, Clopidogrel or Aspirin. Its vitamin C content may increase iron absorption.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Amla or any ingredient
- Bleeding disorders, unless a doctor advises it
- Within 2 weeks before planned surgery
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Some people may get acidity, stomach upset, loose stools or constipation.
Get urgent medical help if you notice unusual bleeding or bruising, black stools, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, rash or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Amla eaten as food is generally safe. Medicinal amounts have not been well studied in pregnancy and breastfeeding; ask your doctor before use.
Precautions and Warnings
People with diabetes should monitor blood sugar and check sugar content in syrups. Tell your doctor if you have kidney stones, liver disease or take blood thinners. Not a replacement for prescribed medicines.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause stomach upset, acidity and diarrhoea. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe.
