Indications

Eucalyptus Oil is an essential oil from eucalyptus leaves. It is used, often together with Menthol, Camphor or other oils, in steam inhalations and vapour rubs to ease a blocked nose and chest congestion from colds, and in balms, rubs and sprays for short term relief of muscle aches, joint pain, sprains and stiffness.

How It Works

The main active substance in eucalyptus oil, called cineole (eucalyptol), gives a cooling, fresh feeling in the nose that makes breathing feel easier and may help loosen mucus. On the skin it acts as a counter irritant: it causes a mild warming or cooling sensation that distracts from the deeper ache. Evidence for these benefits is modest, and it does not cure infections.

Dosage and Administration

Use only as directed on the label. It is for inhalation or use on the skin, not for swallowing.

  • Steam inhalation: add the amount stated on the label (often a few drops or 1 capsule) to a bowl of hot, not boiling, water and breathe in the steam for 5 to 10 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day. Keep children well away from hot water.
  • Rubs and balms: rub a small amount gently onto the chest, back or painful area 2 to 3 times a day. Wash hands afterwards.

Interactions

No important interactions are expected when used on the skin or by inhalation as directed. Avoid using several products containing eucalyptus or camphor at the same time.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to eucalyptus or any ingredient.
  • Babies and young children under 2 years: do not apply near the face or nose, as it can trigger breathing problems or spasm of the airways.
  • Broken, burnt or infected skin.

Side Effects

Skin redness, burning or itching and eye or nose irritation may occur. In people with asthma, strong vapours can sometimes trigger wheezing.

Get urgent medical help if there is difficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling of the face or a severe skin reaction, or if any amount is swallowed by a child.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Occasional use of inhalations or rubs as directed is generally considered low risk, but ask your doctor first. When breastfeeding, do not apply to the chest area where a baby may come into contact with it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Never swallow eucalyptus oil; even small amounts can be poisonous, especially for children.
  • Keep away from eyes, inside the nose and mucous membranes.
  • Do not use with tight bandages or heating pads.
  • See a doctor if symptoms last more than 7 days or come with high fever.

Overdose

Swallowing the oil can cause burning in the mouth, vomiting, drowsiness, fits, breathing difficulty and coma, sometimes within minutes. Do not make the person vomit; seek emergency medical help immediately.

Therapeutic Class

Herbal decongestant and topical counter irritant (essential oil).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and heat, with the lid tightly closed and out of the reach of children.
