Indications

Gnaphalium (Gnaphalium polycephalum, also called sweet everlasting or cudweed) is a homeopathic preparation made from a flowering plant. In homeopathy it is traditionally used for nerve pain that alternates with numbness, especially sciatica and pain running down the legs. In skin creams it is combined with other homeopathic ingredients and traditionally used to ease burning, tingling and numbness in the feet and legs, such as the nerve discomfort seen in diabetes. Scientific evidence for homeopathic remedies is limited, and it does not cure the cause of nerve pain.

How It Works

The plant material is diluted many times in line with homeopathic methods. Homeopathy holds that such dilutions can ease symptoms similar to those the substance causes in larger amounts. There is no proven scientific explanation for this effect.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. For a cream, wash and dry the area and gently massage a thin layer into the affected skin, usually a few times a day. Do not apply to broken skin, wounds or ulcers. Wash your hands after use.

Interactions

No significant interactions with other medicines are known for topical homeopathic preparations. Keep taking your prescribed medicines, including pain and diabetes medicines, as advised by your doctor.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to Gnaphalium, plants of the daisy family or any ingredient of the product.
  • Broken, infected or ulcerated skin at the area of use.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon. Local redness, itching or rash may occur, particularly in people sensitive to daisy family plants. Stop using it if irritation develops.

Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing. See a doctor urgently for back or leg pain with weakness in the legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little information on use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only if a doctor or registered practitioner advises it, and do not apply it to the breast area when breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

Long-lasting nerve pain or numbness should be checked by a doctor to find the cause. Do not stop prescribed treatment in favour of homeopathy. Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth. People with diabetes should check their feet every day for wounds or blisters.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely with a homeopathic cream. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, contact a doctor and take the pack with you.

Therapeutic Class

Homeopathic preparation.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Close the tube tightly after use.
