Indications

Hingastak Churna (also called Hingvashtak Churna) is a classical Ayurvedic digestive powder made from eight ingredients: asafoetida (hing), dry ginger, black pepper, long pepper, ajwain (carom seed), cumin, black cumin and rock salt. It is traditionally used for indigestion, loss of appetite, bloating, wind, belching and mild stomach cramps after meals. Scientific evidence for the combination is limited, though several of its spices are known to ease wind.

How It Works

The spices contain aromatic oils that relax the muscles of the gut and help release trapped gas, and they stimulate saliva, stomach acid and digestive juices. Asafoetida is particularly known for relieving wind. Rock salt adds taste and may further stimulate appetite.

Dosage and Administration

Take it as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. It is traditionally mixed with the first mouthful of rice and ghee, or taken with warm water, before or with meals. Do not exceed the recommended amount.

Interactions

Medicinal amounts of these spices may increase stomach acid and could reduce the effect of acid-reducing medicines such as Omeprazole. Asafoetida and ginger may slightly increase bleeding risk with blood thinners such as Warfarin and may lower blood pressure or blood sugar, so take care if you use medicines for these conditions. Its salt content may matter if you take blood pressure medicines.

Contraindications

Do not use it if you are allergic to any of the spices. Avoid it if you have stomach ulcers, severe acid reflux or a bleeding disorder. Do not give asafoetida-containing products to infants.

Side Effects

Possible effects include heartburn, a burning feeling in the stomach, mouth irritation and loose stools. Allergic reactions are rare.

Get urgent medical help if you vomit blood or pass black stools, have severe or persistent stomach pain, or develop swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Asafoetida in medicinal amounts has traditionally been avoided in pregnancy because it may affect the womb. Do not use this powder during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

People on a salt-restricted diet for high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease should note the salt content. Ongoing indigestion, weight loss, difficulty swallowing or vomiting need a doctor’s check. Stop medicinal use about two weeks before surgery.

Overdose

Too much may cause stomach burning, diarrhoea or vomiting. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or a child has swallowed a large amount.

Therapeutic Class

Ayurvedic herbal preparation (traditional digestive and carminative).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the container tightly closed, as the powder absorbs moisture.
