Indications

L-Arginine is an amino acid, one of the building blocks of protein. As a supplement it is used to support blood flow and general nutrition, and it is included in some pregnancy and wellness supplements. Under medical advice it is sometimes used in conditions linked to poor blood flow. Evidence for many uses is still limited, and it is not a replacement for prescribed treatment.

How It Works

The body uses L-Arginine to make nitric oxide, a natural substance that relaxes and widens blood vessels and improves blood flow. It is also involved in making proteins, in removing ammonia from the body through the urea cycle, in wound healing and in immune function. The body normally makes enough, but needs may rise at certain times.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by your doctor. Sachets or powders are usually dissolved in water and taken once or twice a day. Do not exceed the recommended amount. In pregnancy, use only if a doctor has advised it.

Interactions

L-Arginine may add to the effect of blood pressure medicines, nitrates (such as Glyceryl Trinitrate) and Sildenafil or similar medicines, causing low blood pressure. It may lower blood sugar, so people taking diabetes medicines should monitor their sugar. Take care with blood thinners and with diuretics that raise potassium, such as Spironolactone.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to L-Arginine or any ingredient
  • Recent heart attack
  • Low blood pressure
  • Severe kidney or liver disease, unless a doctor advises

Side Effects

Most people tolerate it well. Possible effects include bloating, stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhoea, headache and lowered blood pressure with dizziness. It may trigger cold sore outbreaks in people with herpes.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, fainting, or chest pain.

Pregnancy and Lactation

L-Arginine is found in normal food and is included in some pregnancy supplements. Use supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding only at the dose advised by your doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

Talk to your doctor before use if you have heart disease, low blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, asthma or a history of herpes. Stop taking it about 2 weeks before planned surgery because it may affect blood pressure. Supplements do not replace a balanced diet.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause severe diarrhoea, stomach pain and low blood pressure. Seek medical advice if a large amount is taken, especially by a child.
