Indications

Lecithin is a natural mixture of fatty substances called phospholipids, usually taken from soybeans, sunflower seeds or egg yolk. As a supplement it is used as a source of choline (a nutrient the body uses for nerve and liver function), to support liver health, and as part of brain tonic and cholesterol support products. It is also widely used in foods and medicines as an emulsifier, an ingredient that helps oil and water mix. Evidence that lecithin supplements treat any disease is limited.

How It Works

Phospholipids are building blocks of every cell membrane. The main one in lecithin, phosphatidylcholine, supplies choline, which the body uses to make acetylcholine (a chemical messenger in the brain) and to move fat out of the liver. Lecithin may also help the gut absorb fats and fat soluble nutrients.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label. Capsules are usually swallowed with water during or after a meal.

Interactions

No important drug interactions are well known. Large amounts of choline may, in theory, add to the effect of medicines that act on acetylcholine, such as Donepezil. Tell your doctor about all supplements you take.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to lecithin or its source (soy or egg), or to any ingredient.

Side Effects

Lecithin is generally well tolerated. Some people get diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain or a feeling of fullness. Very high choline intake can cause a fishy body odour.

Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or widespread hives.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Lecithin in normal food amounts is considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and choline is an important nutrient at these times. Ask your doctor before taking a concentrated supplement.

Precautions and Warnings

  • People with soy or egg allergy should check the source of the lecithin on the label.
  • Liver disease or high cholesterol needs medical care; supplements are not a replacement for prescribed treatment.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause diarrhoea, stomach upset, sweating, low blood pressure or a fishy body odour from excess choline. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe.

Therapeutic Class

Nutritional supplement (phospholipid, source of choline); also a pharmaceutical emulsifier.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
