Indications
Lutein is a natural yellow pigment (carotenoid) found in green leafy vegetables, maize and egg yolk. As a supplement, usually together with Zeaxanthin, it is used to support eye health and to help slow the progress of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that affects central vision in older people. It is also found in many multivitamin and eye-health products.
How It Works
Lutein builds up in the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. There it filters harmful blue light and acts as an antioxidant, protecting the cells from damage.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: commonly 10 mg a day, often with 2 mg of Zeaxanthin, or as on the product label. Take it with a meal that contains some fat, which helps absorption. Benefits for the eyes, if any, build up over months of regular use.
Interactions
No serious drug interactions are known. Orlistat, Cholestyramine and mineral oil can reduce its absorption. High doses of Beta-carotene may lower lutein absorption.
Contraindications
Allergy to lutein or any ingredient of the product (some products contain fish oil, soy or gelatin).
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. High doses taken for a long time can turn the skin slightly yellow, which is harmless and fades after stopping.
Get urgent medical help if you have:
- Swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or a severe rash.
- Sudden loss of vision, distorted vision or new blind spots; see an eye doctor at once, as lutein cannot treat these.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Lutein from food is safe. The small amount in a pregnancy multivitamin is considered safe, but there is little information on high-dose supplements, so use them only if a doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
Lutein does not replace regular eye check-ups or treatment for eye disease. Smokers and former smokers should choose eye supplements that contain lutein rather than Beta-carotene. Keep to the labelled dose.
Overdose
Lutein has very low toxicity. Too much may only cause harmless yellowing of the skin. Contact a doctor if you feel unwell.
Therapeutic Class
