Indications
Magnesium hypophosphite is a mineral salt found in calcium and multimineral tonics and tablets. It is used, usually together with Calcium, Vitamin D and other minerals, to help meet magnesium and phosphorus needs, support bone health, and in general tonics during recovery from illness or in poor diet.
How It Works
It supplies magnesium. Magnesium is needed for healthy bones, for muscles and nerves to work properly, for a steady heartbeat and for many of the body’s energy reactions. In combination products it works alongside Calcium and Vitamin D to support bone strength.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by your doctor. Syrups are usually measured with the supplied cup or spoon and tablets swallowed with water, often after meals. Do not take more than the recommended amount.
Interactions
- Magnesium and calcium reduce the absorption of Tetracycline and Quinolone antibiotics (such as Ciprofloxacin), Levothyroxine, Iron and Bisphosphonates; separate them by at least 2 to 4 hours.
- Use with care alongside other magnesium-containing antacids or laxatives to avoid taking too much.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
- Severe kidney disease (magnesium can build up).
- High blood magnesium or calcium levels.
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Mild stomach upset, nausea or loose stools can occur. Combination products containing calcium may cause constipation.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of too much magnesium (severe weakness, very slow breathing, low blood pressure, slow heartbeat, drowsiness), or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Mineral supplements at recommended doses are generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Use only the product and dose your doctor advises.
Precautions and Warnings
- People with kidney disease should use magnesium-containing products only under medical advice.
- Check the label for sugar content of syrups if you have diabetes.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
Overdose
Large overdoses, especially with kidney problems, can cause high magnesium levels with weakness, low blood pressure, slow heartbeat and breathing problems. Contact a doctor or hospital.
