Indications
Mahadraksharishta is a traditional Ayurvedic liquid tonic made mainly from grapes (draksha) together with other herbs, and fermented so that it contains a small amount of naturally formed alcohol. It is traditionally used as a general tonic for weakness and tiredness, poor appetite, recovery after illness, and for long-standing cough and breathing complaints. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it does not replace medical treatment for asthma, tuberculosis, anaemia or other illnesses.
How It Works
Grapes provide natural sugars and plant antioxidants, while the other herbs in the formula are traditionally believed to support digestion, appetite and the respiratory system. The fermentation process is meant to draw out the active plant substances and preserve the liquid. How the preparation works has not been well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. It is usually taken after meals, often mixed with an equal amount of water. Measure each dose with the cup provided. Do not give to children unless a practitioner advises it.
Interactions
Because it contains a little alcohol, avoid taking it with Metronidazole, Tinidazole or other medicines that react with alcohol, and take care with sleeping pills, sedating antihistamines and other medicines that cause drowsiness. Its sugar content can affect blood sugar control in people on diabetes medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Allergy to grapes or any herb in the formula.
- People who must avoid alcohol, including those recovering from alcohol dependence.
- Active liver disease, unless a doctor advises it.
- Poorly controlled diabetes, unless a doctor advises it.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated in label amounts. Some people may notice a warm or burning feeling in the stomach, heartburn, loose stools or mild drowsiness. Allergic reactions such as rash or itching are uncommon.
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, severe stomach pain, or if a cough comes with blood, high fever or weight loss.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Because of its alcohol content and the lack of safety studies, it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless a doctor specifically advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
A cough lasting more than three weeks, breathlessness, wheezing or ongoing tiredness should be checked by a doctor, as they may be signs of conditions such as tuberculosis, asthma or anaemia that need proper treatment. People with diabetes should count its sugar content. It may cause mild drowsiness in some people, so take care when driving.
Overdose
Taking much more than the label amount may cause stomach upset, drowsiness and effects from the alcohol and sugar content. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, seek medical help.
