Indications
Manganese sulphate is a source of manganese, a trace mineral the body needs in very small amounts. It is mainly found as an ingredient of multivitamin and mineral supplements and some bone and joint products, used to help prevent nutritional deficiencies.
How It Works
Manganese helps several enzymes in the body work. It takes part in forming bone and cartilage, in turning carbohydrates, fats and protein into energy, and in protecting cells from damage.
Dosage and Administration
Supplements usually provide about 1 to 5 mg of manganese a day; take them as directed on the pack or by your doctor. Adults should not take more than 11 mg of manganese a day from all sources. Taking it with or after food can reduce stomach upset.
Interactions
Iron, Calcium and Magnesium can reduce manganese absorption. Like other minerals, it may reduce the absorption of some antibiotics (such as Tetracycline and Ciprofloxacin), so take them at least 2 hours apart.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
- Severe liver disease or blocked bile flow, because manganese leaves the body through bile and can build up.
Side Effects
At normal supplement doses side effects are uncommon. Mild stomach upset may occur.
Get urgent medical help if you have: shaking, stiffness, slow movement, difficulty walking, or unusual mood or behaviour changes (possible signs of manganese build-up), or swelling of the face, lips or throat or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
The small amounts in pregnancy multivitamin products are considered safe. Do not take extra manganese beyond the recommended amount unless your doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
People with liver disease and those on long-term feeding through a drip have a higher risk of manganese build-up and need medical advice. Do not take several manganese-containing products together unless advised. Keep mineral supplements away from children.
Overdose
A single large dose may cause nausea and stomach upset. Taking too much over a long time can harm the brain and nerves, causing movement problems similar to Parkinson’s disease. Stop taking it and seek medical advice; go to hospital if a child swallows supplements.
