Indications
Manganese is an essential trace mineral. It is included in multivitamin and mineral supplements, in some bone and joint supplements, and in drip feeding solutions for people who cannot eat. True deficiency is rare, because most diets provide enough from whole grains, nuts, pulses, tea and leafy vegetables.
How It Works
Small amounts of manganese help many enzymes work. These enzymes are involved in forming bone and cartilage, using carbohydrates, fats and protein, healing wounds and protecting cells from damage.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults need about 1.8 to 2.3 mg a day, mostly from food. Supplements usually provide 1 to 5 mg a day.
- Do not take more than 11 mg a day from all sources unless a doctor advises it.
- Manganese given through a drip: as prescribed.
Take with or after food, as directed on the product.
Interactions
- Iron, Calcium, Magnesium and antacids can reduce manganese absorption.
- Manganese may reduce the absorption of Doxycycline and other tetracyclines, and Ciprofloxacin and other quinolones; take these at least 2 hours apart.
- Taking several supplements that contain manganese together can lead to too much.
Contraindications
- Liver disease or blocked bile flow, since manganese leaves the body through the bile and can build up.
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
At usual supplement doses, side effects are rare. Long-term excess, especially in people with liver disease or on long-term drip feeding, can affect the brain and nerves.
Get urgent medical help for shaking, muscle stiffness, slow or unsteady movements, unusual changes in mood or behaviour, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Normal amounts, such as those in pregnancy multivitamins, are safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid high-dose manganese supplements unless a doctor advises them.
Precautions and Warnings
- Use with care in liver disease, iron deficiency (which increases manganese absorption) and in older people.
- Check the labels of all your supplements so that you do not take manganese from several products at once.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
Overdose
A single large dose by mouth rarely causes serious harm, but it may cause stomach upset. Taking too much over a long time can cause nerve damage with symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease. Stop taking it and seek medical advice.
