Indications
This is a food supplement that combines a melon (Cucumis melo) extract rich in the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) with vitamins and minerals. It is used as a supportive product for people with vitiligo, a condition in which patches of skin lose their colour. It may also be used for general antioxidant support. It does not cure vitiligo and is meant to be used alongside treatment advised by a skin specialist, such as creams or light therapy.
How It Works
In vitiligo, the pigment cells of the skin (melanocytes) are thought to be damaged partly by oxidative stress, a build up of harmful reactive molecules. SOD from melon extract and antioxidant vitamins and minerals are intended to help the body neutralise these molecules and protect pigment cells. Some small studies suggest a modest benefit when combined with light therapy, but the evidence is limited.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by your doctor, usually once or twice daily with food and water. Results, if any, usually take several months. Do not take more than the recommended amount.
Interactions
Avoid taking other multivitamin or mineral supplements at the same time unless advised, to prevent taking too much of some vitamins. Tell your doctor if you take Levothyroxine, antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin or Doxycycline (minerals can reduce their absorption, so keep 2 to 4 hours apart), or blood thinners such as Warfarin.
Contraindications
- Allergy to melon or any other ingredient.
- Conditions where extra vitamins or minerals must be avoided, unless your doctor agrees.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Mild stomach upset, nausea, bloating or a change in stool colour may occur. Allergic skin reactions are rare.
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is little information about this combination in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only if your doctor advises it, and do not combine it with a separate pregnancy vitamin without checking the total amounts.
Precautions and Warnings
Vitiligo can be linked to thyroid disease and other autoimmune conditions, so see a doctor for proper assessment. Use sunscreen on white patches, as they burn easily. Keep away from children, because iron and other minerals can be harmful to them in large amounts.
Overdose
Taking a large amount may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain or diarrhoea. If a child swallows several tablets or capsules, seek medical help promptly and bring the pack.
