Indications

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a sulfur-containing compound found naturally in small amounts in some foods. As a supplement it is used, often together with Glucosamine, Chondroitin or Turmeric, to support joint health and to ease mild joint pain and stiffness, especially in osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis). Evidence suggests a small benefit for pain in some people, but it does not repair damaged joints.

How It Works

MSM supplies sulfur, which the body uses to build connective tissue such as cartilage. It is also thought to have mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that may reduce joint pain and swelling. The exact way it works is not fully understood.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label. Studies in adults have commonly used about 1.5 to 3 g a day in divided doses with food. Benefits, if any, may take several weeks to appear.

Interactions

No important interactions are well documented. Because combination joint products may contain Glucosamine or Turmeric, check with a doctor if you take blood thinners such as Warfarin or medicines for diabetes.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to MSM or any ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Possible effects include mild stomach upset, bloating, diarrhoea, headache, tiredness and difficulty sleeping.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash with swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Avoid unless a doctor advises.

Precautions and Warnings

  • See a doctor for joint pain with redness, heat, fever, sudden swelling, or pain after injury.
  • Supplements do not replace exercise, weight control and prescribed treatment for arthritis.
  • Not recommended for children unless advised by a doctor.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause stomach upset and diarrhoea. Contact a doctor if a large amount has been taken.

Therapeutic Class

Dietary supplement (joint health).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
