Indications
Mucopolysaccharide polysulphate is applied to the skin as a gel or cream to relieve pain, swelling and bruising from blunt injuries such as knocks, sprains and contusions, and to ease superficial vein inflammation (superficial thrombophlebitis), varicose vein discomfort and swelling after drips or injections. It may also help soften hard scars and swollen tissues.
How It Works
It is a heparin-like substance (a heparinoid). Applied to the skin, it reduces local blood clotting, improves blood flow in small vessels, helps the body break down and absorb collected blood from bruises, and has an anti-inflammatory effect, which together reduce swelling and pain.
Dosage and Administration
For adults and children over 12 years, apply a strip of gel or cream (usually 3 to 5 cm) to the affected area 1 to 3 times a day and rub in gently, or as directed on the label or by a doctor. For vein inflammation, spread it gently without massaging. It can be covered with a light dressing. Treatment usually lasts until symptoms improve, often 1 to 2 weeks; see a doctor if there is no improvement.
Interactions
No significant interactions are known with medicines taken by mouth. Do not apply other creams or gels to the same area at the same time unless advised.
Contraindications
- Allergy to mucopolysaccharide polysulphate, heparin or any ingredient (such as parabens).
- Open wounds, broken or infected skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Occasionally there may be local redness, itching, burning or rash where it is applied, which normally goes away after stopping.
Get urgent medical help for a red, hot, painful and swollen leg or arm (possible deep vein thrombosis), sudden chest pain or breathlessness, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Very little is absorbed through the skin and harm is not expected, but use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only on medical advice. Do not apply to the breast area while breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- For external use only.
- It does not treat deep vein thrombosis: get a medical check for a swollen, painful limb.
- Avoid contact with the eyes; wash hands after use.
- Not usually used in children under 12 without advice.
Overdose
Overuse on the skin is unlikely to cause harm. If swallowed, rinse the mouth and seek medical advice.
