Indications
This is an A to Z type multivitamin and multimineral supplement (gold formula) for adults. It provides a broad range of vitamins, such as A, B group, C, D, E and K, and minerals, such as Calcium, Iron, Zinc, Magnesium, Iodine and Selenium, in one daily tablet. It is used to prevent or correct mild nutritional shortfalls caused by poor or irregular diet, recovery from illness, stress, heavy physical work, older age, or increased needs. It is not a replacement for a balanced diet or treatment of a specific deficiency diagnosed by a doctor.
How It Works
Vitamins and minerals are needed in small amounts for normal body functions: making energy from food, forming red blood cells, keeping bones, teeth, skin, nerves and the immune system healthy, and acting as antioxidants. When the diet does not provide enough, a multivitamin and multimineral tablet helps fill the gap so the body has what it needs for these processes.
Dosage and Administration
Usually one tablet once a day with or after a meal, with water, or as directed on the label. Do not take more than recommended. Taking it with food improves absorption and reduces stomach upset.
Interactions
Calcium, iron, zinc and magnesium can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics such as Tetracycline, Doxycycline and Ciprofloxacin, and of Levothyroxine; take these at least 2 to 4 hours apart. Vitamin K can reduce the effect of Warfarin, so people on Warfarin should check with their doctor. Avoid taking other supplements containing vitamin A, D or iron at the same time unless advised, to avoid excess.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
- Conditions with iron overload (such as haemochromatosis) or high blood calcium.
- High levels of vitamin A or D in the blood.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Some people may have mild nausea, stomach upset, constipation or diarrhoea, an unpleasant taste or dark stools (from iron). Bright yellow urine is harmless and is caused by riboflavin (vitamin B2).
Get urgent medical help for an allergic reaction with rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Standard adult formulas may contain levels of vitamin A that are not suitable in pregnancy. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use a pregnancy-specific supplement or ask their doctor before using this product.
Precautions and Warnings
- Do not exceed the recommended dose; vitamins A and D and iron can build up and be harmful in excess.
- Smokers should check with a doctor, as high beta-carotene intake has been linked to lung cancer risk in smokers.
- People with kidney disease should ask a doctor before use.
- Keep out of reach of children: accidental iron overdose is dangerous for young children.
Overdose
Taking many tablets at once, especially by a child, can cause iron poisoning with vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, shock. Long-term excess can cause vitamin A or D toxicity. Get medical help at once in case of overdose.
Therapeutic Class
