Indications
This is a complete A to Z multivitamin and multimineral tablet of the “gold” type, designed for adults, often with amounts suited to people over 40 or 50. It is used to help meet daily nutritional needs when the diet is poor or unbalanced, during recovery from illness, in older age, during periods of stress or heavy work, and to help prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies. It is a supplement and does not treat any specific disease.
How It Works
Each tablet contains a broad range of vitamins (such as vitamins A, B group, C, D, E and K) and minerals (such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, iodine, selenium, copper and chromium), and sometimes Lutein or Lycopene. These nutrients act as building blocks and helpers for many body processes: turning food into energy, making blood cells, keeping bones, nerves, skin and eyes healthy, and supporting the immune system. Taking them regularly helps fill gaps left by the diet.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: one tablet once daily with or after a meal, with a glass of water, or as directed on the label. Do not take more than the recommended amount. Not intended for children unless a doctor advises it.
Interactions
- Calcium, iron, zinc and magnesium can reduce absorption of some antibiotics (such as Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline, Tetracycline) and Levothyroxine; take these at least 2 to 4 hours apart.
- Vitamin K can reduce the effect of Warfarin; keep your intake steady and tell your doctor.
- Avoid taking other vitamin A, D or iron supplements at the same time unless your doctor advises it.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient, have high blood calcium, iron overload conditions (such as haemochromatosis), or excess vitamin A or D in the body.
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Some people notice:
- Mild nausea, stomach upset or constipation
- Unpleasant taste
- Bright yellow urine (harmless, caused by vitamin B2)
- Dark stools if the product contains iron
Get urgent medical help if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Adult multivitamins are not designed for pregnancy and some contain amounts of vitamin A that may not be suitable. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use a prenatal supplement recommended by their doctor instead.
Precautions and Warnings
- Smokers and former smokers should avoid long-term high doses of beta-carotene; ask your doctor if the product contains it.
- People with kidney disease, kidney stones or on medicines for heart, thyroid or blood clotting should check with a doctor first.
- A supplement does not replace a balanced diet.
- Iron-containing tablets can be very harmful to young children; keep them safely stored.
Overdose
Taking many tablets at once, especially by a child, can cause iron poisoning or excess vitamin A or D, with vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness and other serious effects. Seek medical help immediately.
