Indications

This is an A to Z multivitamin and multimineral syrup made for children. It is used to help prevent and correct vitamin and mineral shortfalls in children with poor appetite, fussy eating, an unbalanced diet, during growth spurts, and during recovery from illness.

How It Works

The syrup supplies a broad range of vitamins (such as A, B group, C, D and E) and minerals (such as zinc, iron, iodine and calcium, depending on the formula). Together these support normal growth, healthy bones and teeth, red blood cell production, energy release from food, brain development and the immune system.

Dosage and Administration

Give as directed on the label or by your doctor; the amount depends on the child’s age. It is usually given once a day, after a meal, using the measuring cup or spoon provided. Shake well before use. Do not give more than the recommended amount, and do not give other vitamin products at the same time unless advised.

Interactions

If the formula contains iron, zinc or calcium, it can reduce absorption of some antibiotics such as Tetracycline, Doxycycline or Ciprofloxacin, and of Levothyroxine; give these at least 2 hours apart. Avoid combining with other supplements containing vitamin A or D unless a doctor advises.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient
  • High blood calcium or high levels of vitamin A or D
  • Iron overload conditions, if the formula contains iron
  • Hereditary sugar intolerance, if the syrup contains sugars that the child cannot tolerate

Side Effects

Most children have no problems. Mild stomach upset, nausea, loose stools or constipation may occur. Iron, if present, can make stools darker, which is harmless. The syrup may cause temporary staining of teeth.

Get urgent medical help if the child has signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, or if the child has swallowed a large amount.

Pregnancy and Lactation

This product is designed for children. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use a supplement made for their needs, as advised by their doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

Supplements do not replace a varied, balanced diet. Keep the bottle out of reach: children may find the sweet syrup tempting, and too much vitamin A, vitamin D or iron can be harmful. Diabetic children should note the sugar content. See a doctor if poor appetite or poor growth continues.

Overdose

Swallowing a large amount, especially of an iron-containing syrup, can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and drowsiness and can be dangerous. Seek medical help straight away, even if the child seems well.

Therapeutic Class

Multivitamin and multimineral supplement (paediatric)

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the cap tightly closed and use within the period stated on the label after opening.
