Indications
This is a multivitamin preparation that contains both fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and water-soluble vitamins (the B group, such as B1, B2, B6, B12, Niacin and Folic Acid, and Vitamin C). It is used to prevent or correct vitamin shortfalls caused by poor diet, illness, recovery from surgery, poor appetite, or periods of higher need, in adults and, with suitable forms such as drops or syrup, in children.
How It Works
Vitamins are needed in small amounts for many body processes. Vitamin A supports vision, skin and immunity; Vitamin D helps absorb calcium for bones; Vitamin E protects cells from damage; Vitamin K helps blood clot normally. The B vitamins help release energy from food and support nerves and blood formation, and Vitamin C supports immunity, wound healing and iron absorption. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body, while water-soluble vitamins are not stored in large amounts and need regular intake.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by your doctor. Adults usually take one tablet or capsule a day after a meal. For children, drops or syrup are measured by age with the dropper or measuring cup provided, as directed on the label. Fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed better when taken with food.
Interactions
Vitamin K can reduce the effect of Warfarin, so people on Warfarin should keep their vitamin intake steady and tell their doctor. Folic Acid may lower the levels of some antiepileptics such as Phenytoin. Orlistat, Cholestyramine and mineral oil can reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Avoid taking other vitamin A or D supplements at the same time unless advised.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to any ingredient, or if you already have excess Vitamin A or Vitamin D, or a high blood calcium level.
Side Effects
Side effects are uncommon at normal doses. They may include:
- Mild stomach upset, nausea or diarrhoea
- Bright yellow urine, caused by Vitamin B2 and harmless
- Unpleasant taste
Get urgent medical help for signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash with swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on the advice of your doctor, who may prefer a product made for pregnancy. Large amounts of Vitamin A can harm an unborn baby, so do not exceed the recommended dose.
Precautions and Warnings
Do not take more than the recommended dose, because fat-soluble vitamins can build up in the body. Do not combine with other multivitamins unless your doctor advises it. Supplements do not replace a balanced diet. Ask your doctor before use if you have kidney or liver disease.
Overdose
Taking too much over a long time can cause Vitamin A or D toxicity, with headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, thirst, bone pain or liver problems. If a large amount has been taken, or a child has swallowed the product, contact a doctor.
Therapeutic Class
