Indications

Myo-inositol is a nutritional supplement, a sugar-like substance related to the B vitamins. It is mainly used to support women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where it may help regulate menstrual cycles, support ovulation and improve insulin resistance. It is sometimes combined with D-chiro-inositol and Folic Acid, and is also used to support egg quality during fertility treatment and to help with blood sugar in pregnancy under medical advice. It is not a substitute for medical treatment.

How It Works

Myo-inositol is found naturally in fruits, beans, grains and nuts, and is also made by the body. It acts as a messenger inside cells for insulin and for hormones that control the ovaries, such as FSH. In PCOS, the body often responds poorly to insulin, which raises male hormone levels and disturbs ovulation. Myo-inositol helps cells respond better to insulin, which may lower insulin and male hormone levels and help restore regular ovulation.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by your doctor. A commonly used amount in PCOS is 2 g twice a day (4 g daily), often as a powder dissolved in water or as tablets, usually taken for at least 3 months to judge the effect. Combination products contain a fixed ratio with D-chiro-inositol; follow the pack instructions.

Interactions

It may add to the blood sugar-lowering effect of diabetes medicines such as Metformin or Insulin; monitor blood sugar if you take these. No other important interactions are well known. Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements, especially during fertility treatment.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Myo-inositol or any ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

It is generally well tolerated at usual amounts. Higher amounts may cause nausea, wind, loose stools, stomach discomfort, tiredness, headache or dizziness.

Get urgent medical help for an allergic reaction with swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing, or for signs of very low blood sugar such as confusion or fainting.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Myo-inositol has been studied in pregnancy and is generally considered safe at usual amounts, but use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding only on your doctor advice.

Precautions and Warnings

  • PCOS and irregular periods should be assessed by a doctor before starting supplements.
  • People with diabetes should monitor blood sugar.
  • People with bipolar disorder should consult a doctor, as high doses may affect mood.
  • It does not replace a healthy diet, exercise and weight management in PCOS.

Overdose

Taking more than directed may cause stomach upset and diarrhoea. Serious toxicity is not expected; contact a doctor if symptoms are troublesome.
