Indications

Nonoxinol (nonoxynol) is a surfactant, a soap-like substance that helps liquids spread and mix. In this product it is combined with Iodine to make an iodophor antiseptic and disinfectant solution, used for cleaning skin, wounds, instruments and surfaces, and on farms for hygiene such as teat dipping in dairy animals. On its own, a related form (nonoxynol-9) is also known as a spermicide in some contraceptive products.

How It Works

Nonoxinol lowers the surface tension of water, so the solution wets and spreads over skin and surfaces more evenly. It also holds Iodine in a stable complex and releases it slowly, so Iodine can kill bacteria, fungi and viruses while being less irritating than plain iodine. Nonoxinol itself has no important healing action on its own in this use.

Dosage and Administration

For external use only. Use as directed on the label, which explains how much to dilute the solution for each purpose (skin, wounds, equipment or animal use). Do not swallow. For veterinary use, follow the label or a veterinarian’s directions.

Interactions

Do not mix with other antiseptics, especially those containing mercury compounds or Hydrogen peroxide, as they may react or reduce effectiveness. Soap residues and organic matter such as blood or dirt can lower activity, so clean the area first.

Contraindications

Do not use in people or animals allergic to iodine or nonoxinol, in people with thyroid disease or those receiving radioactive iodine treatment, or on large areas of broken skin or burns unless advised by a doctor. Not for use in or near the eyes.

Side Effects

Skin irritation, redness, dryness, itching or a rash may occur, especially with strong solutions or repeated use. Iodine can stain skin and fabrics.

Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, or if the solution is swallowed.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Repeated or large-area use of iodine products in pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect the baby’s thyroid, so avoid regular use unless advised by a doctor. Brief use on small areas is usually considered low risk.

Precautions and Warnings

Use only diluted as instructed. Avoid long or frequent use on large areas, in newborns and in people with kidney problems. Keep away from eyes and mouth. Wear gloves when handling concentrated solution. Do not use as a substitute for medical treatment of deep or infected wounds.

Overdose

Swallowing the solution can cause burning of the mouth and throat, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea, and with large amounts, iodine poisoning. Seek medical help at once and do not make the person vomit.

Therapeutic Class

Surfactant used in iodophor antiseptic and disinfectant (inactive carrier ingredient).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a tightly closed container, in a dry place away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
