Indications
Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is used to prevent and treat vitamin B5 deficiency, which is rare and usually happens together with other B vitamin deficiencies from poor diet or alcohol use. It is most often found as part of B-complex and multivitamin products. A related form, Dexpanthenol, is used in creams for dry or damaged skin.
How It Works
The body turns pantothenic acid into coenzyme A, a substance needed to release energy from food and to make fats, hormones and other important molecules.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: about 5 mg a day meets normal needs. Supplements usually contain 5 to 10 mg, often combined with other B vitamins. Higher doses only as the doctor advises. Take by mouth with or without food. Injections, if used, are given by a doctor or nurse.
Interactions
No important interactions are known at normal doses. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, especially if you use high-dose supplements.
Contraindications
Allergy to pantothenic acid or any ingredient of the product. Injections containing related forms should not be used in people with haemophilia or bowel blockage, unless a doctor advises.
Side Effects
Usually very well tolerated. Very high doses may cause mild diarrhoea or stomach upset.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safe at normal recommended amounts, which are slightly higher in pregnancy and breastfeeding (about 6 to 7 mg a day). Avoid high-dose supplements unless a doctor advises them.
Precautions and Warnings
Supplements are not a substitute for a balanced diet. If symptoms such as tiredness, burning feet or numbness continue, see a doctor, because the cause may be something else.
Overdose
Serious harm is unlikely. Large amounts may cause diarrhoea. Stop taking it and seek medical advice if you feel unwell.
