Indications
Racecadotril is used to treat the symptoms of sudden (acute) watery diarrhoea in adults and children. It is given together with oral rehydration solution and plenty of fluids, which remain the most important part of treatment.
How It Works
Racecadotril blocks an enzyme called enkephalinase in the lining of the gut. This allows natural substances called enkephalins to work for longer, which reduces the excess secretion of water and salts into the bowel. Unlike some other antidiarrhoeal medicines, it does not slow the movement of the gut, so it is less likely to cause constipation or bloating.
Dosage and Administration
Adults: the usual dose is 100 mg by mouth three times a day, preferably before meals. The first dose can be taken at any time. Continue until two normal stools are passed, for no longer than 7 days. Children: granules or sachets are dosed by body weight as prescribed by a doctor. Always give oral rehydration solution alongside.
Interactions
Taking Racecadotril with ACE inhibitors such as Enalapril, Ramipril or Captopril may increase the risk of angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat). Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.
Contraindications
Do not use Racecadotril if you are allergic to it. Some sachet forms contain sucrose and should not be used by people with rare sugar intolerance problems. It should not be used without medical advice for diarrhoea with blood or pus in the stool, high fever, or diarrhoea caused by antibiotics.
Side Effects
Side effects are uncommon. They may include:
- Headache
- Skin rash, redness or itching
Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a severe or blistering skin reaction. Also seek help quickly if there are signs of dehydration such as very little urine, sunken eyes, extreme thirst or drowsiness, especially in children.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Racecadotril is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding because there is not enough safety information. Oral rehydration remains safe and important; ask your doctor for advice.
Precautions and Warnings
See a doctor if diarrhoea lasts more than 7 days in adults or more than 2 days in young children, or if there is blood in the stool, high fever or repeated vomiting. Use with care in people with liver or kidney problems. Racecadotril does not replace fluids and salts lost through diarrhoea.
Overdose
No serious effects are expected from a single overdose, but contact a doctor if much more than the recommended dose has been taken, especially by a child.
Therapeutic Class
Antidiarrhoeal (intestinal antisecretory agent, enkephalinase inhibitor).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
