Indications

Shatamul, also known as Shatavari, is the root of Asparagus racemosus, a climbing plant widely used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. It is traditionally used as a tonic for women’s health, for example to support milk production in breastfeeding mothers, for general weakness, and for symptoms around menopause. It is also traditionally used for acidity and stomach discomfort. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited and mostly comes from small or laboratory studies.

How It Works

The root contains plant compounds called saponins (shatavarins) along with other substances. These are thought to have mild hormone-like (phytoestrogen) effects, antioxidant effects and a soothing effect on the stomach lining. How it works in people has not been clearly established.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. It is usually taken with water or milk, after meals.

Interactions

Shatavari may have a mild diuretic effect (increasing urine) and may lower blood sugar, so tell your doctor if you take diuretics such as Furosemide, Lithium, or medicines for diabetes such as Metformin or Insulin. Because of possible hormone-like effects, ask a doctor before using it with hormone treatments, including oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to asparagus or related plants.
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast, womb or ovarian cancer, endometriosis or fibroids, unless a doctor agrees.
  • Children, unless a practitioner advises it.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include stomach upset, loose stools, weight gain and, rarely, allergic reactions such as rash, itching or sneezing.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid during pregnancy, as safety has not been established. It is traditionally used during breastfeeding to support milk supply, but good safety data are lacking, so use it only after talking to a doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

People with diabetes should check their blood sugar more often while using it. Low milk supply can have treatable causes, so speak to a doctor or breastfeeding counsellor as well. Stop using it if you develop an allergic reaction.

Overdose

No serious effects of overdose are well known, but very large amounts may cause stomach upset. If a large amount is swallowed by a child, get medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Ayurvedic and Unani herbal preparation (tonic).
