Indications

Silicon is a trace mineral found in grains, oats, vegetables and drinking water. It is included, often as silica, in supplements for hair, skin, nails and bones. Evidence that it improves these is limited, and it is not used to treat any disease.

How It Works

Silicon appears to help the body form collagen (a protein that gives strength to skin, hair, nails and connective tissue) and may support bone mineralisation.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the product label. Supplements commonly provide about 5 to 10 mg of silicon a day. Do not take more than the label states unless a doctor advises it.

Interactions

No important interactions are known at supplement amounts.

Contraindications

Allergy to any ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Some people have mild stomach upset.

Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Normal dietary amounts are safe. There is not enough information on silicon supplements in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so ask a doctor before using them.

Precautions and Warnings

Talk to a doctor first if you have kidney disease, as the kidneys clear silicon from the body. Long-term use of some silicate antacids in large amounts has been linked to kidney stones.

Overdose

Serious effects are unlikely. If a large amount is taken and you feel unwell, seek medical advice.

Therapeutic Class

Trace element (mineral supplement).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children.
