Indications
Sodium Alginate is used to relieve heartburn, acid reflux (acid coming up into the food pipe), sour taste in the mouth and indigestion, including reflux during pregnancy. It is usually combined with Sodium Bicarbonate, Calcium Carbonate or Potassium Bicarbonate in liquids and chewable tablets.
How It Works
When it meets stomach acid, sodium alginate forms a thick gel that floats like a raft on top of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a barrier that keeps acid from rising into the food pipe. The partner ingredients also neutralise some of the acid.
Dosage and Administration
Strengths differ between products, so follow the label. Adults and children over 12: liquid usually 10 to 20 ml, or 2 to 4 chewable tablets chewed well, after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times a day. Shake liquids well before use. Children under 12: only as advised by a doctor. If symptoms last more than 7 days, see a doctor.
Interactions
The antacid ingredients in these products can reduce the absorption of some medicines, such as Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Ciprofloxacin and other quinolone antibiotics, iron tablets, Levothyroxine, Digoxin and Ketoconazole. Take those medicines at least 2 hours before or after this product.
Contraindications
Allergy to sodium alginate or any ingredient of the product. Products containing calcium should be avoided by people with high blood calcium or calcium kidney stones unless a doctor advises them.
Side Effects
Side effects are rare. Some people get bloating, belching or mild stomach discomfort. Get urgent medical help for signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing), vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, chest pain, or difficulty or pain when swallowing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Commonly used for heartburn in pregnancy and during breastfeeding, and considered safe at usual doses. Avoid long-term or high-dose use without a doctor’s advice.
Precautions and Warnings
These products contain sodium, and some contain calcium or potassium. Ask a doctor before use if you are on a low-salt diet or have heart failure, high blood pressure or kidney disease. See a doctor if you have unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing, persistent vomiting, or new indigestion after the age of 55.
