Indications
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) extract is used as an ingredient in some herbal and nutritional supplements, especially products for prostate and urinary health. Tomato is a rich source of lycopene, a red plant pigment and antioxidant. Lycopene from tomato is used to support general health and has been studied for prostate health in men, but evidence that it prevents or treats prostate disease is limited and not conclusive.
How It Works
Lycopene is an antioxidant: it helps neutralise unstable molecules called free radicals that can damage cells. It collects in tissues such as the prostate. Tomato also provides vitamin C, potassium and other plant compounds. The body absorbs lycopene better when tomato is cooked or taken with a little fat.
Dosage and Administration
Take the supplement as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner, usually with a meal. Eating tomatoes and tomato products as part of a normal diet is safe for most people.
Interactions
No important interactions with medicines are well known at normal supplement amounts. Tell your doctor about all supplements you take, especially if you take blood-thinning medicines such as Warfarin or Aspirin, as high amounts of some antioxidant supplements have not been well studied with them.
Contraindications
- Allergy to tomato or to any other ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
At usual amounts it is well tolerated. Some people may get stomach upset, heartburn or loose stools. Very high intake of lycopene over a long time can turn the skin slightly orange; this is harmless and fades when intake is reduced.
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the lips or face, hives or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Tomatoes eaten as food are safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Concentrated supplements have not been well studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so ask a doctor before using them.
Precautions and Warnings
- A supplement is not a substitute for medical check-ups. Men with urinary symptoms should see a doctor to rule out prostate problems.
- People with severe acid reflux may find tomato products worsen heartburn.
Overdose
No serious effects from overdose are known. Taking too much may cause stomach upset. Contact a doctor if you feel unwell after taking much more than the label advises.
