Indications
Withania somnifera, widely known as Ashwagandha, is a root used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. It is traditionally used as a tonic for stress, tiredness, poor sleep and general weakness, to support strength and stamina, and in men for low vitality and fertility. Some modern studies suggest it may modestly reduce stress and improve sleep, but the evidence is still limited and it is not a treatment for any disease.
How It Works
The root contains natural compounds called withanolides. These are thought to help the body cope with stress by calming the stress hormone system (lowering cortisol), and to have mild calming, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It is described as an adaptogen, meaning a herb believed to help the body adapt to physical and mental stress.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Root extract products are commonly taken once or twice daily with food. Do not take more than the stated amount, and do not use it for longer than about 3 months without advice.
Interactions
It may increase drowsiness with sleeping pills, Clonazepam, Diazepam, alcohol or other sedatives. It may lower blood sugar and blood pressure, so take care with diabetes and blood pressure medicines. It may affect thyroid hormone levels, so tell your doctor if you take Levothyroxine or thyroid-blocking drugs. It may also reduce the effect of immunosuppressants such as Tacrolimus or Cyclosporine.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Ashwagandha or plants of the nightshade family.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Liver disease.
- Overactive thyroid.
- Autoimmune diseases (such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis) unless a doctor agrees.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated in the short term. Possible effects include stomach upset, loose stools, nausea, drowsiness and headache. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported.
Get urgent medical help if you notice yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, severe tiredness with loss of appetite, pain in the upper right abdomen, or signs of allergy such as swelling of the face and difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy, as large amounts have traditionally been linked with miscarriage. Avoid during breastfeeding because safety is not known.
Precautions and Warnings
Stop taking it at least 2 weeks before planned surgery, as it may add to the effects of anaesthesia. Use care when driving if it makes you sleepy. Check with a doctor before use if you have a thyroid, liver or hormone-sensitive condition such as prostate cancer. Buy only registered products.
Overdose
Large amounts may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, severe drowsiness or low blood pressure. Stop the product and seek medical advice, bringing the pack.
