Indications
Zeaxanthin is a yellow plant pigment (a carotenoid) found in green leafy vegetables, maize and egg yolk. It is taken as a supplement, usually together with Lutein, to support eye health, especially in people with or at risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD, a condition that damages the centre of the retina and blurs central vision). It may also be used to support vision in people who spend long hours in front of screens.
How It Works
Zeaxanthin collects in the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. There it filters harmful blue light and acts as an antioxidant, protecting eye cells from damage caused by light and ageing. Large studies have shown that a supplement containing Lutein and Zeaxanthin can slow the progress of intermediate AMD.
Dosage and Administration
The usual amount is 2 mg daily, often combined with 10 mg of Lutein, taken with a meal that contains some fat to help absorption. Follow the label or your eye doctor’s advice. It is meant for long-term use.
Interactions
No important medicine interactions are known. Medicines that reduce fat absorption, such as Orlistat, and cholesterol-lowering resins may reduce how much Zeaxanthin is absorbed.
Contraindications
Do not use if you are allergic to Zeaxanthin or any other ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- Mild stomach upset
- Harmless yellowish tint of the skin with very high intake
Get urgent medical help if you notice sudden loss or distortion of vision, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Zeaxanthin from food is safe. There is limited information on high-dose supplements in pregnancy and breastfeeding, so ask your doctor before taking them.
Precautions and Warnings
Supplements do not cure AMD or restore lost vision. Have regular eye check-ups, and see an eye doctor promptly if your vision changes. Some eye formulas also contain Beta-carotene, which smokers should avoid; check the label.
Overdose
Zeaxanthin has low toxicity. Very large amounts may cause yellowing of the skin, which fades after stopping.
Therapeutic Class
