About the Medicine

Citicoline

Indications

Citicoline is used as an add-on treatment to support recovery of the brain after a stroke or head injury, and for memory and thinking problems linked to reduced blood flow in the brain. In some countries it is also used for glaucoma. The evidence for these uses is mixed, and it does not replace standard stroke care.

How It Works

In the body it breaks down into choline and cytidine. These help build and repair the outer layers (membranes) of brain cells and make acetylcholine, a chemical messenger involved in memory.

Dosage and Administration

Tablets or oral solution, adults: usually 500 to 1000 mg a day in 1 or 2 doses, or as prescribed. It can be taken with or without food. Injection: given by a doctor or nurse into a vein or muscle, at a dose prescribed by the doctor.

Interactions

It may increase the effect of Levodopa. Do not use it together with Meclofenoxate. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take.

Contraindications

Allergy to citicoline or any ingredient, and conditions with an overactive vagus nerve (vagotonia), which can cause a slow heartbeat and fainting.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Possible effects include stomach upset, diarrhoea, headache, restlessness, trouble sleeping, dizziness, and changes in blood pressure.

Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, or for new or worsening weakness, trouble speaking, a drooping face or a sudden severe headache, which can be signs of another stroke.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little safety information. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if your doctor decides it is needed.

Precautions and Warnings

  • After bleeding inside the skull, injections are given slowly and at a low dose under hospital care.
  • It does not replace blood pressure, blood thinner or other treatments your doctor has prescribed after a stroke.

Overdose

Citicoline has low toxicity, and serious harm is unlikely. Seek medical advice if a large amount has been taken.

Therapeutic Class

Neuroprotective agent (nootropic).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze the oral solution or injection.
